Short answer

Keloids commonly form on the earlobes, chest, shoulders, upper back and neck, but they can develop wherever skin has been injured.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Raised scar extending beyond the original injury

Why location matters

A keloid is an overgrown scar that rises above the skin and may extend beyond the original cut, piercing, burn, injection, surgery, or inflamed spot. The earlobe is a familiar site after piercing; the chest, shoulders, upper back, and neck are also common. A scar may feel firm, itchy, tender, or tight and can gradually enlarge. A raised mark is not automatically a keloid: hypertrophic scars stay within the original wound, while other [Skin Lumps](/symptoms/skin-lumps/) can have different causes. Severe [Acne](/conditions/acne/) can also precede scarring on the chest or back.

Planning treatment

Avoid picking or repeatedly injuring the area, and protect a healing wound according to clinical advice. Treatment depends on the scar's site, thickness, symptoms, and whether it has returned before. Options may include [Steroid Injection Into The Skin](/treatments/injectables/intralesional-steroid-injection/), [Fractional Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/fractional-laser-treatment/), [Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/pulsed-dye-laser-treatment/), freezing treatment, or surgery. A specialist should explain that a procedure can require follow-up care because keloids may recur.

When to seek care

Book a dermatology assessment for a scar that grows beyond the original injury, becomes itchy or painful, restricts movement, or repeatedly returns. Seek earlier advice for a keloid near the eye, mouth, joint, or airway, or when a lesion bleeds, ulcerates, or changes quickly. New growth without a clear injury should be examined rather than self-treated.

Questions for your doctor

Does this scar fit a keloid or a hypertrophic scar? Which option suits its location and thickness? Would treatment such as [Keloid Removal Surgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/keloid-excision/) need a plan to reduce regrowth, and how should future wounds be managed?
