Common cold throat: what should you know?

Cold viruses can inflame the moist lining of the nose and throat. Mucus draining from a blocked nose may add irritation, especially overnight. A mild cough can also keep the throat tender. A sore throat is a common presentation of a common cold, but throat discomfort can also occur with conditions such as sinusitis or acute bronchitis.

The appearance of mucus does not by itself tell you whether antibiotics are needed. A clinician considers the whole pattern, including breathing, hydration, fever, and how symptoms change over time.

Sip warm or cool fluids according to what feels soothing, choose soft foods, and rest your voice. Avoid cigarette smoke and other irritants. A pharmacist can help you select an appropriate pain reliever or throat product after checking your age, pregnancy status, allergies, and other medicines. Do not give honey to a child under one year.

If nasal mucus is running down the throat, managing the blocked nose may reduce the tickle that triggers coughing. Handwashing and avoiding close contact while unwell can reduce spread.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, a muffled voice, swelling in the neck, or signs of dehydration. Arrange a clinical assessment if throat pain is severe, symptoms are worsening rather than settling, or you develop persistent earache or chest symptoms. Children with a barking cough or noisy breathing need prompt assessment because croup can affect the airway.
