How long does a common cold last?

Symptoms often begin with throat irritation, sneezing, or a runny nose and then include congestion and cough. The intensity can change from day to day. A lingering cough does not automatically mean the infection is worsening, because airway irritation can remain after other symptoms ease.

A new fever, worsening breathlessness, chest pain, dehydration, or a clear decline after initial improvement is less typical of a straightforward cold. Sinusitis, acute bronchitis, croup, or a middle ear infection may need consideration when symptoms change in character or become focused in one area.

Prioritise sleep, drink regularly, and use warm fluids or saline spray for comfort. Honey may soothe a cough in people older than infancy; never give honey to an infant. Reduce smoke and other airway irritants, and wash hands before preparing food or touching your face.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are not gradually improving, return after settling, or interfere substantially with drinking, sleeping, or normal activity. Seek urgent care for difficult breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, confusion, or signs of significant dehydration. Children with breathing effort, unusual drowsiness, or poor drinking need prompt assessment.
