Common cold first symptoms

A cold is a viral infection affecting the upper airways. Symptoms may build gradually rather than arriving all at once. Nasal mucus can become thicker as the illness continues, while throat irritation may trigger a cough. A blocked nose can make sleep harder and may reduce the sense of smell. These features fit a common cold, but symptoms can overlap with other respiratory illnesses.

Rest when you can, drink fluids regularly, and use warm drinks to soothe an irritated throat. Saline nasal drops or spray may help loosen mucus. Wash your hands and avoid sharing cups or towels while symptoms are active. Read medicine labels carefully and ask a pharmacist before using a product if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take regular medicines.

Seek prompt medical advice for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, marked drowsiness, dehydration, or symptoms that become severe. Arrange an assessment if symptoms are worsening instead of easing, a high temperature persists, or ear pain, facial pain, or a cough that is becoming more troublesome develops. Infants and people with weakened immunity may need advice earlier.
