Common cold and eye discharge: what to know

A cold can irritate the eyes and cause watering or a small amount of clear mucus. Sticky discharge, gritty discomfort and red eyes may occur with Conjunctivitis, which can be viral or have another cause. Itchy, watery eyes with sneezing may fit Allergic Conjunctivitis. Thick discharge that returns after cleaning, marked eyelid swelling or increasing pain deserves medical assessment. Eye discharge is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Clean crusts gently with clean water and a fresh cotton pad or clean cloth for each eye; wash hands before and after. Avoid rubbing your eyes, sharing towels or using another person’s eye drops. Remove contact lenses until the eyes are comfortable and a clinician advises that lenses can be worn again. A cool compress may ease irritation. Do not use leftover antibiotic drops, because the appropriate treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange prompt medical review for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, injury, pronounced swelling, or discharge with a contact lens. Seek urgent help for sudden vision change or severe eye pain. A clinician can examine the eye and decide whether the discharge is linked to Conjunctivitis, allergy or another problem.
