Cold urticaria on the face

The cheeks, lips, eyelids, or exposed skin may become red, itchy, raised, or swollen shortly after cooling. A cold drink, wind, air conditioning, ice, or splashed water can be enough to trigger symptoms. Lip or eyelid swelling may be angioedema, which is deeper swelling beneath the skin. Take a photograph when safe and note whether the reaction stays local or spreads.

Cover your face from cold wind, warm chilled skin gradually, and avoid rubbing or applying ice to the area. Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care while the reaction settles. Do not deliberately provoke facial swelling to confirm the diagnosis. A clinician can review your history and may recommend an oral antihistamine treatment or another plan.

Seek emergency help if facial swelling is accompanied by tongue or throat swelling, hoarseness, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Get prompt medical advice for swelling around the eyes or lips that keeps returning, especially after cold-water exposure.
