Cold hands and headache: possible explanations

Hands can feel cool when the body narrows skin blood vessels in a cold environment or during stress. A headache alongside this may occur with not drinking enough, missed meals, poor sleep, a respiratory infection or heat exposure. [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/) may also bring thirst, dry mouth, dark urine or dizziness. Nasal congestion and facial pressure can accompany allergic rhinitis or sinusitis, while headache is also a recognised presentation of viral illnesses such as a common cold or COVID-19.

Record when the headache started, where it hurts, how severe it feels, and whether fever, vomiting, visual change, neck stiffness, weakness or a rash is present. Cold hands alone does not identify the cause.

Rest in a cool, quiet place, sip fluids, eat if you have missed a meal, and warm your hands gently. Reduce screen glare and avoid alcohol. If you normally can take it, use a simple pain reliever exactly as directed; check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another condition or take other medicines. After heat exposure, stop exertion and cool down gradually.

Get emergency help for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, seizure, stiff neck with fever, severe breathing difficulty, or a new vision problem. Seek prompt care after significant heat exposure, ongoing vomiting, marked dehydration, or a hand that becomes blue, very pale, painful or numb. Arrange a routine review when headaches recur, change pattern or interfere with daily life.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dehydration, infection, sinus disease, heat exhaustion or anxiety; whether your medicines could contribute; and which headache features should prompt urgent help. Bring a record of timing, triggers, fluids, meals, temperature and any treatment used.
