Can coffee cause bloating?

Short answer
Coffee can be followed by bloating in some people, but milk, sweeteners, swallowed air and other digestive causes may also be responsible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening
Bloating is a sensation of fullness or visible abdominal swelling. Coffee can stimulate gut movement, while hot drinks taken quickly may lead to swallowed air. The ingredient added to the cup may be more relevant than coffee itself: milk can trouble people with lactose intolerance, and some sweeteners can ferment in the gut. A recurring pattern can also occur with [Irritable Bowel Syndrome](/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/) or another digestive condition.
Bloating after coffee does not identify one diagnosis. Persistent symptoms with diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia, vomiting or a change in bowel habit need assessment for causes such as [Coeliac Disease](/conditions/coeliac-disease/), [Food Intolerance](/conditions/food-intolerance/) or infection.
How to investigate the pattern
For several days, note the coffee type, speed of drinking, milk or sweetener, meals, bowel movements and the timing of swelling. Try one change at a time, such as a smaller serving or a version without milk, so the result is meaningful. Do not remove gluten before medical advice if coeliac disease is being considered. A [Nutrition Counselling](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/nutrition-counselling/) appointment can help you test changes without unnecessary restriction.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if bloating is persistent, worsening, painful or associated with altered bowel habits. Seek urgent help for severe or sudden abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen rigid abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, blood in stool, fainting or marked weakness. These signs should not be explained away as coffee.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether lactose, another food intolerance, medication, constipation or a digestive condition could explain the pattern; which tests are appropriate; and which foods should remain in your diet while assessment is underway.

Questions people ask
Is milk in coffee a common reason for bloating?
It can be a factor for someone who does not digest lactose well, but other ingredients and conditions can cause similar symptoms.
Should you remove many foods at once?
Usually no. Changing one factor at a time makes it easier to identify a genuine pattern and avoid needless restriction.
