What should you know about cloudy yellow smelly urine?

Urine can look darker and smell stronger when you have not had enough fluid. Foods, vitamins, medicines, or a long interval between bathroom visits can also alter its appearance or odour. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, or cells in the urine. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy or strong-smelling urine, especially with burning, needing to urinate often, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection presents with urinary symptoms plus fever, chills, pain in the side or back, or feeling very unwell. The urine change alone cannot identify the cause.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and notice whether the urine becomes clearer. Do not take leftover antibiotics or use someone else’s medicine. Record when the change began, its colour and smell, any pain or discharge, and products or foods that changed recently. If it continues, returns repeatedly, or comes with burning or urgency, arrange a urine assessment with a clinician.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, kidney disease, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for contacting a clinician about urinary changes. Severe illness or inability to keep fluids down needs urgent help.

Ask whether you need a urine test, whether your symptoms fit a urinary tract infection, and which warning signs should bring you back. Mention pregnancy, medical conditions, medicines, allergies, and any recent antibiotics.
