Cloudy urine during menstruation: what to know

Menstrual blood, vaginal discharge, or small amounts of tissue may enter the toilet or collection cup and change how urine looks. Dehydration can also make urine more concentrated during a period, particularly if pain, nausea, or heavy bleeding has reduced your fluid intake. A single cloudy observation is difficult to interpret without a clean sample.

Cloudiness may instead reflect a urinary tract infection. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell are clues to discuss with a clinician. Drink regularly if you can, and observe the urine after the period has ended. If a urine test is requested, tell the clinician that you are menstruating. They may advise how to collect a clean midstream sample or decide whether testing should wait, depending on your symptoms.

Avoid douching or inserting products to change the sample. Do not take antibiotics without medical advice. Record burning, urgency, pain, fever, unusual discharge, or changes that continue between periods.

Get prompt medical help for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood that seems unrelated to menstrual flow, feeling faint, or difficulty passing urine. Make an appointment if urinary burning, urgency, or frequency persists after menstruation, or if cloudiness repeatedly appears in clean samples.

Ask whether the appearance could be sample contamination, whether you need a urine test now, and how to collect it during bleeding. Share the first day of your period, the timing of the cloudy sample, fluid intake, and every urinary symptom.
