What should you know about cloudy thick urine?

Urine may seem thick when it is concentrated after sweating, poor intake, or overnight. Crystals and mucus can give it a hazy, stringy, or sediment-like appearance. A urinary tract infection may produce cloudy urine with burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, pelvic pressure, or a strong smell. Kidney infection symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the side or back. Thick appearance can also be affected by discharge entering the sample, so it should be interpreted alongside the rest of the picture.

Check whether the urine becomes clearer after your normal fluid intake and whether the change is repeated. Keep a brief note of colour, smell, pain, urgency, fever, and any discharge. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription. If the appearance persists or symptoms develop, book an assessment; a clinician may request a fresh urine sample and choose treatment based on the findings.

Seek urgent care for fever with flank or back pain, shaking chills, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Contact a clinician promptly if there is blood, painful urination, worsening discomfort, or repeated cloudy urine. People who are pregnant, have kidney problems, or have a weakened immune system should seek advice sooner when infection symptoms are present.
