Cloudy pee and dehydration: what to know

When the body has less fluid available, urine becomes more concentrated and often looks darker or stronger-smelling. It may appear cloudy, although cloudiness can also reflect crystals, mucus, or cells from inflammation. Diarrhoea and vomiting from gastroenteritis, heavy sweating during heat exhaustion, and difficulty drinking can all lead to dehydration. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudy urine with burning, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort. Kidney stones can cause cloudiness alongside cramping pain or blood.

Sip fluids regularly and replace fluid lost through sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Small, frequent drinks may be easier if you feel nauseated. Rest somewhere cool after heat exposure. The urine should become lighter as hydration improves, but do not force fluids if you have been told to restrict them. Avoid using cloudy urine alone to diagnose dehydration; pay attention to thirst, dizziness, dry mouth, and how often you pass urine.

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or signs of heat illness. Seek prompt advice for fever, back or side pain, painful urination, blood in urine, or cloudiness that does not settle after drinking normally. Children, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions can become dehydrated quickly.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dehydration or need a urine test, how much fluid is suitable for you, and which warning signs require urgent review. Mention recent vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exposure, or changes in urine volume.
