What should you know about cloudy looking urine?

Urine can look hazy when crystals, mucus, blood cells, white cells, or external material are present. Collection in a non-clean container can also change what you see. If there is burning, urgency, frequent urination, or pressure low in the abdomen, a urinary tract infection is one possible explanation. Fever, shaking, nausea, or pain in the side or back raises concern for infection higher in the urinary system. Dehydration may cause thirst and reduced urine output and can change concentration, but appearance cannot diagnose it.

Observe the change without repeatedly checking or forcing excess water. Drink your normal amount unless you have a prescribed restriction. Write down timing, urinary symptoms, pain, fever, medicines, supplements, and whether the cloudiness occurs every time. If it lasts, recurs, or causes discomfort, arrange an assessment; a urine test can provide information that sight alone cannot.

Seek prompt medical help for fever with urinary symptoms, flank pain, vomiting, confusion, blood in the urine, inability to urinate, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician early during pregnancy or if you have kidney disease or impaired immunity. A cloudy appearance is not itself a measure of severity, so red-flag symptoms take priority.

Ask how soon a urine sample should be provided, whether medicines need review, and what result would change the plan. Describe any discharge, recent urinary infections, fever, pain, or changes in urine volume.
