What should you know about cloudy light colored urine?

A pale shade often reflects recent fluid intake, while cloudiness can come from crystals, cells, mucus, or particles in the urine. A temporary change after waking, exercise, a new food, or a supplement may settle when you drink normally. Cloudiness with burning, frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell can occur with a urinary tract infection. Cloudiness with fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back needs more prompt attention because infection can involve the kidneys. Dehydration can also alter urine concentration, although it more often makes urine darker.

Notice when the change began and whether it appears in every urine sample. Drink fluids according to your usual needs unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not use leftover antibiotics or treat urine appearance alone. Arrange a medical review if cloudiness persists, returns repeatedly, or comes with urinary discomfort; a urine test can check for infection, blood, protein, crystals, or other changes.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever with urinary symptoms, shaking chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, confusion, or feeling markedly unwell. Prompt assessment is also sensible if you see blood, cannot pass urine, or are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have reduced immunity. These features do not identify one cause by themselves, but they can signal a problem needing timely examination.
