What should you know about cloudy bits in urine?

Particles may appear after urine has stood, when mineral crystals settle, or when mucus mixes with the sample. Cloudiness alongside burning, frequent urination, an unpleasant smell or pelvic discomfort can occur when a urinary tract infection is present. Kidney stones can cause severe side pain and blood, while kidney infection can bring fever, chills or nausea. A photograph can be useful, but it cannot replace examination or urine testing.

Use a clean container if you need to observe a fresh sample, and note whether particles recur. Keep drinking normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Book an appointment if bits continue, are accompanied by urinary discomfort, or appear after treatment for an infection. A clinician may request a fresh urine sample and ask about discharge, periods, medicines and recent illness because these can affect what enters the sample.

Get prompt care for fever, shaking chills, pain in the back or side, repeated vomiting, visible blood, inability to urinate, or severe worsening pain. If pregnancy is possible, urinary symptoms deserve early review. Emergency help is appropriate when confusion, faintness or profound weakness accompanies a urinary change.

Ask what the particles might represent, whether the sample should be repeated, and whether testing for infection or blood is needed. Mention any vaginal discharge, recent period, new medicine, stone history and the timing of each episode.
