What should you know about cloudy acidic urine?

Urine acidity and appearance can change with hydration, diet, medicines and the way a sample is stored. Concentrated urine may look cloudy, while crystals, mucus, cells or inflammation can also alter its appearance. A urinary tract infection may cause cloudiness with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort or a strong smell. A kidney infection can add fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated, but cloudiness alone cannot identify its cause. A urine test can check for infection, blood, protein and other findings when symptoms persist.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and notice whether the urine clears as you rehydrate. Do not use leftover antibiotics or urinary remedies without advice. Arrange a medical review if cloudiness continues, returns repeatedly, or occurs with burning, urgency, pain, blood, fever or an unusual smell. Provide a fresh midstream urine sample if requested, following the collection instructions so the result is useful. Pregnancy, kidney disease, diabetes or reduced immunity lowers the threshold for seeking advice.

Seek urgent care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These features can occur with a kidney infection or significant dehydration. Seek prompt advice for visible blood, inability to pass urine, severe pain, or urinary symptoms during pregnancy. Do not rely on urine appearance alone to judge severity.
