Closed-bore MRI scanners: what to expect

You lie on a moving table while the body area being examined is positioned within the bore. The scanner is noisy, and staying still is essential for clear pictures. The technologist can see, hear and speak with you throughout the examination.

Closed-bore describes the cylindrical design around the examination table; it does not mean that you are sealed inside. Bore width and magnet length vary between machines. A short-bore or wider-bore model may leave more of the body outside the magnet, depending on which area needs imaging.

The design can provide detailed images for cancer detection, staging, treatment planning or follow-up. The most suitable scanner depends on the body part, required image quality, implanted devices, body size and ability to remain in position. An open scanner may feel less confining, but it is not suitable for every examination. Some scans use gadolinium contrast through a vein to make particular tissues easier to distinguish.

Complete the MRI safety screening accurately. Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implanted pumps, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, neurostimulators, joint replacements, metal fragments, prior surgery, pregnancy or possible pregnancy. If you have an implant card, bring it; the exact model can determine whether special scanner settings or another test is needed.

Remove metal and electronic items as instructed, including jewellery, hearing aids and clothing with metallic parts. Mention kidney disease, previous reactions to MRI contrast and all medicines if contrast or sedation is planned. Follow the facility's instructions about food, drink and regular medicines rather than making changes yourself.

Tell the team before the appointment if enclosed spaces worry you, you have pain when lying flat, or you may struggle to stay still. They can explain positioning, communication and break options, and assess whether a wider scanner, prescribed sedation or another arrangement is appropriate. If sedation is used, follow the escort and driving instructions provided by the facility.

Use the call device or speak to the technologist immediately if you feel burning, unexpected heating, sharp pain, severe panic, breathing difficulty, dizziness or movement from an implanted device. The team can pause the scan and assess you. Do not try to climb off the table while it is moving.

After contrast, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash. Report persistent pain, swelling or skin change around the injection site promptly. If you received sedation, new severe drowsiness, breathing problems or difficulty waking requires urgent assessment.

Ask which body area will be inside the bore, whether contrast is planned, how the images may change your care, and how long you will need to remain still. If you have an implant or claustrophobia, ask whether its safety has been confirmed, what scanner options are suitable for the required images, and what support is available without compromising the examination.
