What should you know about clear stretch marks?

Short answer
Stretch marks are common lines caused by stretching and changes in the skin’s supportive tissue; they may fade over time, while procedures can soften their colour or texture without erasing them.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why they form
Stretch marks, also called striae, can develop during pregnancy, growth, weight change, or muscle gain. They may begin pink, red, purple, or darker than nearby skin and later become lighter, paler, or slightly indented. They are not contagious and are not caused by poor hygiene. Appearance depends on skin tone, age, hormones, genetics, and how quickly the skin changes.
Ways to improve their appearance
Moisturiser can reduce dryness and itch but does not rebuild the deeper changes that create a stretch mark. A dermatologist can discuss microneedling, RF microneedling, fractional laser treatment, or carboxytherapy. These approaches work differently and may suit different stages and skin tones. Treatment should be planned around pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin disease, recent tanning, and any tendency to form raised scars. Protect treated skin from sunlight while it heals.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if marks appear suddenly without an obvious period of skin stretching, are widespread with easy bruising or muscle weakness, or follow prolonged steroid use. Seek care for severe itching, pain, inflammation, or an unusual rash rather than assuming every line is a stretch mark. A clinician can check the pattern and review medicines or hormonal symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which treatment matches the mark’s colour, age, and texture, how many visits may be needed, and what temporary redness or pigment change to expect. Discuss sun protection and whether your skin is prone to prolonged darkening after procedures.

Questions people ask
Can creams remove stretch marks?
Moisturisers can ease dryness, but ordinary creams generally cannot remove the deeper structural changes of an established stretch mark.
Which procedure is best for stretch marks?
There is no single choice for everyone. A dermatologist selects an approach after considering the mark’s stage, your skin tone, and scarring history.
