What should you know about classical dengue?

Short answer
Classical dengue is a mosquito-borne viral illness that commonly causes sudden fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, and marked tiredness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What classical dengue means
Dengue infection can begin with fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, or a rash. Easy bruising or bleeding can occur and should be reported. Symptoms may overlap with other infections, so a symptom pattern cannot confirm dengue by itself. A GP consultation can help decide whether examination or testing is needed, particularly after travel or residence in an area where dengue occurs.
What to do at home
Rest, drink fluids regularly, and keep a record of fever and other symptoms. Use only medicines recommended by a clinician or pharmacist; some pain medicines can increase bleeding risk and may not be suitable when dengue is suspected. Avoid mosquito bites while unwell by using screens, covered clothing, and an appropriate repellent, because mosquitoes can acquire the virus from an infected person. Do not donate blood until a clinician confirms it is appropriate.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, fainting, or inability to drink. Symptoms can become more concerning as the fever changes, so apparent improvement is not a reason to ignore new warning signs. Pregnant people, young children, older adults, and those with significant medical conditions should seek advice early.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms and recent travel fit dengue, which pain-relief options are suitable, whether testing is needed, how to monitor hydration, and which changes should prompt immediate reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can symptoms alone confirm dengue?
No. Dengue can resemble other infections, so a clinician decides whether examination or testing is appropriate.
Why should bleeding be reported?
Bleeding or unusual bruising can signal a more serious course and needs prompt medical assessment.
