Claritin for a stuffy nose: what to know

Claritin is an antihistamine. It reduces the effect of histamine, a chemical involved in allergy symptoms such as sneezing, an itchy nose and watery eyes. A blocked nose can occur with allergic rhinitis, including sensitivity to house dust mites, or with a common cold and sinus inflammation. Claritin is more relevant when congestion appears alongside an allergy pattern, such as symptoms after exposure to dust, pets or pollen. It will not remove mucus, correct a narrowed nasal passage or treat an infection.

Follow the product label or advice from a pharmacist, and check the active ingredient before combining cold or allergy products. Ask about suitability if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have liver disease, or take regular medicines. A saline nasal rinse, fluids and avoiding a known trigger may also help. Do not assume that a stronger or more frequent dose will clear the nose faster. If symptoms keep returning, discuss whether an allergy treatment plan or assessment for sinus disease is appropriate.

Arrange medical advice if blockage persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, affects one side only, or comes with facial pain, fever, reduced smell or thick discharge. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. A blocked nose with loud snoring or pauses in breathing may need assessment for obstructive sleep apnoea.
