Circles of Hair Loss: What They Can Mean

Smooth, sharply defined patches without scale or redness can occur with alopecia areata. Broken hairs, crusting, scale, tenderness, or swollen areas may point toward scalp ringworm or inflammation. Hair loss from repeated tight styles tends to follow areas under traction, while gradual thinning at the hairline or crown may fit male or female pattern hair loss. Diffuse shedding after illness, major stress, or a body change is more consistent with telogen effluvium than with isolated circles.

The scalp surface, eyebrow or body-hair changes, nail findings, and timing help narrow the possibilities. Hair loss is not a diagnosis by itself, and one person can have more than one contributing process.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a patch is new, enlarging, or accompanied by scalp symptoms. Until then, avoid tight braids, extensions, harsh chemicals, and vigorous brushing over the area. Do not share combs, hats, towels, or pillowcases if scaling or broken hairs raise concern for infection. Photograph the patch from the same angle and note recent illness, stress, medicines, diet changes, and hairstyle tension. Treatments vary: some need anti-inflammatory care, some need antifungal therapy, and selected pattern-loss treatments require a clinician to review suitability. Finasteride is not appropriate for everyone and needs medical discussion.

Seek prompt assessment for painful swelling, pus, fever, marked redness, crusting, or rapidly expanding loss. Arrange review when eyelashes or eyebrows are affected, the scalp is scarred or shiny, or several patches appear. Earlier evaluation matters for children, household contacts with symptoms, and anyone taking medicines that affect immunity. Sudden widespread shedding or hair loss with other new symptoms also deserves clinical review.
