Perioral dermatitis causes clusters of small red bumps, dryness, scaling or sensitivity around the mouth, nose or eyes. The skin may sting and can be mistaken for acne or contact irritation. A thick balm might ease surface tightness for some people, while occlusion or added ingredients may aggravate others.

The condition itself presents with pimples or papules around the mouth; that symptom does not mean every facial bump is perioral dermatitis. Diagnosis depends on the pattern, history and examination, including recent use of topical corticosteroids or new skin products.

Keep the routine simple: use lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing, and pause fragranced or layered products. If you try the balm, use a very small amount on a limited dry area and stop if bumps, burning or redness increase.
