What should you know about chronic common cold?

Short answer
A common cold is usually short-lived; persistent cold-like symptoms may reflect another condition or repeated infections and should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What ongoing symptoms can mean
A cold is a viral infection affecting the upper airways. Blocked nose, cough, sore throat and tiredness can linger while irritated tissues recover, but symptoms that continue or keep returning are not necessarily one unbroken cold. Sinusitis, irritation from mucus draining into the throat, acute bronchitis, or a separate allergy can produce similar features. Ear pressure or earache may follow congestion when the tube behind the eardrum does not drain well. The pattern, triggers and examination findings help distinguish these possibilities.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids, avoid cigarette smoke and use gentle saline nasal care if it suits you. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels or utensils while you have active cold symptoms. A pharmacist can help you choose symptom relief that fits your age, pregnancy status and other medicines; decongestant sprays should not be used longer than directed because overuse can worsen blockage. Arrange a GP assessment when symptoms are persistent, repeatedly return, or interfere with sleep, eating or breathing. Bring a timeline and note fever, facial pressure, wheeze, ear symptoms and any allergy triggers.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Prompt assessment is also sensible for dehydration, a severe or worsening headache, swelling around an eye, a stiff neck, or an earache with marked illness. Children with noisy breathing, drooling or difficulty swallowing need urgent review. These warning signs are based on severity and complications, not on assuming that a persistent cold is something more serious.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be sinusitis, an allergy, bronchitis or an ear problem? Which symptoms should improve first? Is any medicine unsuitable with my current conditions or prescriptions? Do I need an examination of my nose, throat, chest or ears?

Questions people ask
Can a cold feel chronic?
Symptoms can linger, and repeated infections can overlap, but ongoing symptoms should be checked for another cause.
Does a blocked nose explain a cough?
Mucus draining into the throat can irritate it and contribute to cough, although chest causes are also possible.
