Chirorab rabies vaccine: what to know

Rabies vaccine trains the immune system to recognise rabies virus. It may be used before a person has an exposure when risk is ongoing, or after a bite, scratch, or saliva contact that could transmit infection. The post-exposure plan can differ for someone vaccinated previously.

A clinician may recommend Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, which can involve vaccine and additional treatment for some exposures. Do not self-select doses or substitute another product without professional advice. Report troublesome reactions and keep scheduled appointments.

Seek urgent assessment after a bite, broken-skin scratch, or saliva contact with an open wound, eye, mouth, or nose. Emergency help is needed for severe allergic symptoms after vaccination, uncontrolled bleeding, a deep wound, or rapidly spreading redness and swelling.
