Chills after vomiting

Short answer
Chills after vomiting can reflect fluid loss, exertion, or infection, and severe symptoms or dehydration need prompt medical care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common effects
- Sweating, weakness, chills, and dizziness can follow vomiting and fluid loss.
- Rehydration
- Try small frequent sips and increase gradually if tolerated.
- Urgent signs
- Blood, severe pain, stiff neck, confusion, collapse, or very little urine.
What it may mean
Vomiting uses the abdominal muscles and can leave you sweaty, shaky, cold, and weak for a short time. Losing fluid and salts may make chills, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, or a fast heartbeat more noticeable. If vomiting followed spoiled food, a stomach infection, migraine, or another illness, the underlying problem can also cause chills.
Vomiting with severe upper abdominal pain may occur with gallstones or pancreatitis. Vomiting with a stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, or light sensitivity needs urgent assessment because meningitis is one possible cause. Chills do not show which condition is responsible.
What to do now
Rest upright or on your side, rinse your mouth, and wait briefly before trying small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Increase fluids gradually if they stay down. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals until nausea settles, then choose bland foods. Track urine output, temperature, pain, and any blood or unusual material in the vomit. Do not take anti-vomiting medicine unless a clinician or pharmacist says it is suitable.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit with severe pain, confusion, a stiff neck, trouble breathing, collapse, or severe abdominal or chest pain. Seek prompt care if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, become faint, have a persistent fever, or vomiting keeps returning. Children, older adults, and pregnant people can become dehydrated quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what fluid plan is appropriate, which warning signs matter for your age and health, and whether medicines or recent food, travel, or sick contacts could explain the episode. Mention the colour of vomit, pain location, urine changes, and any pregnancy possibility.
