What should you know about a chest X-ray of pulmonary tuberculosis?

Pulmonary tuberculosis may produce changes in the upper lungs, cavities, enlarged lymph nodes or other patterns, although appearances vary widely. An X-ray can support clinical suspicion and show how much of the lung may be involved, but it cannot prove that tuberculosis bacteria are present. A normal image also does not exclude tuberculosis in every situation, particularly when symptoms or immune status raise concern. Clinicians combine the report with cough, fever, night sweats, weight change, exposure history and tests of respiratory samples.

If tuberculosis is suspected, follow instructions about sputum collection, testing and infection precautions. Ask whether you should avoid close indoor contact until a clinician advises that it is safe. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not stop because symptoms improve. Tell the clinician about immune conditions, including HIV infection, previous tuberculosis treatment, travel or household exposure. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing significant blood, chest pain with breathlessness, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for a persistent cough with fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss or swollen glands, especially after close contact with tuberculosis. Do not wait for an imaging appointment if you are acutely unwell.

Ask what the X-ray pattern suggests, which sample tests are needed, whether you could spread infection, what precautions to take, how treatment will be monitored, and whether household contacts need screening.
