Sore throat during chemotherapy

Contact your oncology team using the instructions they provided, particularly if the soreness is new, worsening, or accompanied by fever or difficulty swallowing. They can decide whether you need an examination, infection tests, pain relief, or changes to supportive care.

Chemotherapy can inflame the moist lining of the mouth and throat, causing redness, ulcers, dryness, or painful swallowing. Lower infection-fighting blood cells can also make bacterial, viral, or fungal infections more concerning. Reflux, dehydration, coughing, and other medicines are additional possibilities, so the symptom should not automatically be attributed to chemotherapy irritation.

Sip cool or comfortably warm fluids and choose soft, moist foods if swallowing is manageable. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, very hot drinks, and foods that are sharp, acidic, or spicy when they increase discomfort. Continue gentle mouth care with a soft toothbrush and any bland rinse recommended by your team.

Before using lozenges, sprays, painkillers, herbal products, or medicated mouthwashes, check that they are compatible with your treatment. Numbing products can make swallowing less coordinated, and some painkillers may be unsuitable when blood counts or kidney function are affected. Keep track of fluid intake and whether symptoms are spreading into the mouth.

Use your oncology team's urgent line for fever, chills, worsening throat pain, new white patches, mouth ulcers, swollen glands, or trouble taking medicines and fluids. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, drooling or inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck or facial swelling, confusion, fainting, or signs of severe dehydration such as very little urine.

Ask whether your treatment commonly inflames the mouth and throat, what temperature or symptoms should trigger an urgent call under your personal plan, and which pain relief or rinse you may use. Confirm how to maintain nutrition and hydration if swallowing hurts and whether a dental or throat examination is appropriate.
