What should you know about chemical cautery for epistaxis?

A clinician examines the nasal lining and may use a local numbing medicine before applying a cauterising substance to the identified vessel. The aim is to create a small sealed area so the fragile surface is less likely to reopen. Cautery is most useful when the source can be seen; it may not stop bleeding from a deeper or poorly located vessel. Dry air, nose picking, forceful blowing, allergic inflammation, a cold or sinus symptoms can irritate the lining. High blood pressure may make active bleeding harder to control and should be assessed in context.

Follow the clinician's instructions about ointment or nasal moisturising treatment. Avoid rubbing or picking the treated area, forceful nose blowing and strenuous exertion until advised that healing is underway. Sneeze with your mouth open and keep the nose protected from avoidable irritation. If bleeding starts again, sit forward, breathe through your mouth and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously while seeking advice if it does not settle. Do not insert tissue or objects deeply into the nostril.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding that continues despite firm pressure, blood flowing into the throat with weakness, faintness, trouble breathing, or bleeding after a significant injury. Arrange review when nosebleeds repeatedly return, affect both sides, or occur with easy bruising or medicines that increase bleeding. Allergic Rhinitis, a Common Cold and Sinusitis can contribute to nasal irritation, while Hypertension may need separate assessment.
