Chemical Burn on Face Scar: What to Know

A burn scar forms when healing replaces injured skin with altered tissue. It may appear darker, lighter, raised, indented, shiny, tight, or uneven. A scar near the eyelid, mouth, nose, or jaw can restrict movement as it matures. Colour changes may be more noticeable after sun exposure, while tight tissue can feel itchy or tender.

If the burn is still healing, follow the wound-care plan and avoid picking, fragranced products, and unprotected sun exposure. Once the surface has closed, a dermatologist or burn specialist can assess scar depth, colour, flexibility, and symptoms. Options may include fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery, or a skin graft for selected deep or contractile scars. Treatment is usually planned in stages, with skin type and the scar's location considered carefully.

Arrange prompt medical review for a fresh chemical exposure, an open or worsening wound, increasing pain, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or changes in vision. Seek urgent care if breathing is affected or a chemical has entered the eye. A healed scar also deserves assessment when it limits eating, speaking, blinking, or neck movement, or when it repeatedly cracks or bleeds.

Ask whether the scar is still changing, which layer of skin was affected, whether movement is restricted, and what result is realistic for your skin tone. Discuss preparation, aftercare, possible pigment changes, and whether staged treatment is safer than treating the whole area at once.
