What to know about a flexible cystoscopy check

The thin, bendable scope allows a urology clinician to inspect the bladder lining without a surgical incision, and people commonly return home after the appointment.

After cleaning the opening of the urethra, the clinician applies lubricating anaesthetic gel and gently advances the flexible scope into the bladder. Sterile fluid may be introduced so the bladder walls can be viewed. This can create pressure or an urge to urinate. The clinician examines the lining and then withdraws the instrument.

The check may investigate blood in the urine, urinary symptoms, or an imaging finding, or it may monitor a previously treated bladder condition. The clinician can often explain what was visible before you leave. If an area needs a larger biopsy or removal, a separate procedure using different equipment and anaesthesia may be arranged.

Read the clinic instructions because they take priority over general advice. You may be asked for a urine sample to check for infection. Tell the team if you have fever, burning urine, allergies, possible pregnancy, or take medicine that affects bleeding. Continue or adjust medicines only according to the prescriber's instructions.

Once home, temporary stinging, urinary urgency, and a small amount of blood may occur. Fluids can help if you do not have a medical fluid restriction. Follow the clinic's directions about activity and pain relief, and keep the contact details provided at discharge. Any expected irritation should trend toward improvement rather than becoming more intense.

Call the clinic or an urgent medical service for fever, shaking chills, worsening burning, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, increasing bleeding, or blood clots. Get urgent help if no urine will pass, lower-abdominal pain becomes severe, bleeding is heavy, or you feel faint or acutely unwell. These features need assessment for obstruction, bleeding, or infection.

Ask whether you can eat and drink normally, whether a urine test is required, and how to handle each regular medicine. Clarify what the clinician is looking for, whether a sample could be taken, when findings will be discussed, and what symptoms should trigger a call after you go home.
