Chances of ectopic pregnancy after tube removal

Short answer

Removing one fallopian tube lowers risk from that damaged tube but does not rule out a future ectopic pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pregnancy after one tube removal
It may still occur through the remaining tube.
First check
Early assessment aims to confirm where the pregnancy has implanted.
Emergency signs
Severe pain, fainting or collapse need immediate help.

The short answer

An ectopic pregnancy can develop in the remaining tube or, rarely, in tissue left near the removed tube. Personal risk depends on why surgery was needed, the condition of the remaining tube and factors such as previous ectopic pregnancy or pelvic infection.

How tube removal affects a future pregnancy

A salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube, not the uterus or usually the ovaries. If the other tube is open and functioning, an egg may still travel through it and implant inside the uterus. Surgery cannot make the risk zero because implantation can occur outside the uterine cavity at another site.

Once pregnancy is confirmed, the care team may arrange blood tests and an early transvaginal ultrasound. The purpose is to locate the pregnancy; a single very early scan may be inconclusive, so repeat assessment can be needed.

What to do after a positive pregnancy test

Contact your maternity or gynaecology team promptly and explain which tube was removed, why it was removed and whether you have had an ectopic pregnancy before. Keep the operation report available if possible. Follow the arranged schedule for pregnancy-hormone blood tests and imaging rather than relying on symptoms alone, because an ectopic pregnancy may initially cause no obvious warning signs.

When urgent assessment is needed

Seek urgent medical care during a possible or confirmed pregnancy for new one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, marked weakness or sudden worsening pain. Call emergency services if you collapse, feel faint or have severe pain. These symptoms can occur with internal bleeding and should be assessed without waiting for a routine appointment.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether the remaining tube looked healthy at surgery, when to contact the clinic after a positive test, when imaging is likely to locate the pregnancy, and what number to call outside clinic hours. If both tubes were removed, ask how this changes conception planning and early-pregnancy monitoring.

Questions people ask

Can an ectopic pregnancy occur on the side where a tube was removed?

It can occur in a small remnant of tube or another location outside the uterus, so the pregnancy location still needs confirmation.

Does pelvic pain confirm an ectopic pregnancy?

No. Pelvic pain has many causes, but new pain in pregnancy needs timely assessment, especially with bleeding, dizziness or shoulder-tip pain.

Can symptoms show where the pregnancy is?

Symptoms alone cannot reliably locate a pregnancy. Blood tests and ultrasound are used together with the clinical assessment.
