Understanding the chance of ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy implants outside the womb, most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot develop normally there and can cause internal bleeding if the tube ruptures, so concerning symptoms need assessment based on urgency rather than probability.

A previous ectopic pregnancy, fallopian-tube damage or surgery, pelvic inflammatory disease, fertility treatment, and becoming pregnant with an intrauterine device in place can increase concern. Ectopic pregnancy can also occur without a known risk factor.

Ectopic pregnancy may present with one-sided lower abdominal pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting; some affected people initially have no symptoms. Pelvic pain in pregnancy has many possible causes and does not on its own establish an ectopic pregnancy.

Contact a maternity or early-pregnancy service if you may be pregnant and have pain or bleeding. Assessment can include a pregnancy test, examination, transvaginal ultrasound, and blood tests that track pregnancy hormone levels.

A very early pregnancy may not be visible on the first scan. If you are clinically stable, the team may arrange repeat tests and provide clear return precautions. Attend every follow-up because the location may remain uncertain until the pattern becomes clearer.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for sudden severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, severe dizziness, weakness, pallor, or heavy vaginal bleeding.

These signs may indicate internal bleeding from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell, and do not wait for a scheduled scan or blood-test appointment.

Ask whether the pregnancy has been seen inside the womb, when repeat testing is due, and which symptoms should take you directly to emergency care. If ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed, ask how monitoring, medicine, or surgery fits your condition and what follow-up confirms treatment is complete.
