What should you know about cervical pedicle screw?

It is placed through a strong channel of a neck vertebra and usually connects to a rod. The construct holds chosen spinal segments steady while healing or fusion takes place.

The cervical spine contains the vertebrae in the neck. Each vertebra has pedicles: short bridges of bone that link its front and back portions. A surgeon may guide a screw along a pedicle so the implant gains a firm hold in bone.

Cervical pedicles are close to the spinal cord, nerve roots and major blood vessels, so placement demands detailed planning and precision. The operation may use imaging, navigation or another guidance method. Screw fixation does not itself create a fusion; it provides stability while bone graft can join the intended vertebrae.

Before surgery, give the team a complete medicines list and mention allergies, previous neck operations, smoking or nicotine use, and any new weakness or balance difficulty. Review the planned levels, the reason fixation is needed, the type of guidance being used, and whether fusion is part of the operation.

Afterwards, follow the surgeon’s instructions for wound care, medicines, a neck brace if prescribed, lifting, driving and return to work. Walking is often introduced gradually, but neck exercises and physiotherapy should match the surgical plan. Attend follow-up imaging so the team can assess alignment, hardware position and healing.

Seek urgent assessment after cervical spine surgery for new or worsening weakness, spreading numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or sudden trouble swallowing. These symptoms need prompt evaluation because they can signal pressure on nerves or the spinal cord, a breathing problem, or another postoperative complication.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, increasing wound redness or swelling, drainage, a wound that opens, pain that rapidly worsens, or new arm symptoms. Possible implant-related problems include loss of fixation, screw or rod damage, failure of the intended fusion, and injury to nearby nerves or blood vessels; some may require further imaging or treatment.

Ask which vertebrae will be fixed, why a pedicle route is preferred in your anatomy, and what alternatives could provide stability. Clarify whether bone graft will be used, how placement will be checked during surgery, which risks matter most in your case, what symptoms should trigger an urgent call, and what restrictions apply during recovery.
