Short answer

A wound can allow bacteria into deeper skin and lead to cellulitis, especially when redness, warmth, swelling, or pain spreads around it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Entry point
A break in skin can let bacteria reach deeper tissue.
Concerning change
Redness, warmth, swelling, or pain spreading outward.
Wound care
Gentle cleaning and a clean dressing.

How a wound relates to cellulitis

Cellulitis is an infection of deeper skin, while a wound is the opening that may let bacteria pass through the skin barrier. The wound can be small, including a scratch, crack, bite, blister, or surgical opening. Surrounding Skin Redness that grows, increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, pus, or red streaking is more concerning than a stable healing edge. Athlete's Foot may create tiny cracks that are easy to overlook.

Care while arranging advice

Wash your hands, rinse the wound gently with clean running water, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not squeeze pus, scrub deeply, or share towels. Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness, Painful Skin, or swelling is increasing. Tell the clinician how the wound happened, when it occurred, whether a foreign object may remain, and whether you have diabetes or reduced immunity.

When not to delay

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked swelling, tissue that looks dusky or blistered, loss of feeling, or difficulty moving the nearby joint. Fever, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, or sudden weakness can indicate a more serious infection. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or collapse; Sepsis can progress quickly.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether the wound needs cleaning, drainage, a dressing plan, or treatment for an underlying problem. Check how to recognise spread, when the wound should be reviewed, and whether your tetanus protection or diabetes care needs attention.

Questions people ask

Can a tiny wound cause cellulitis?

Yes. Even a small crack, bite, blister, or scratch can break the skin barrier and provide an entry point for bacteria.

Should I pop a blister over cellulitis?

No. Squeezing or opening it can damage the barrier further; keep it protected and seek clinical advice.
