Is cellulitis while pregnant dangerous?

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper layers of skin. It can cause an area to become red, warm, swollen, tender, and gradually larger. Pregnancy does not make every skin change cellulitis, but infection still deserves attention because your clinician must consider both your condition and medicines that are appropriate during pregnancy. A cracked area between the toes, insect bite, scratch, or wound can provide an entry point; Athlete's Foot may create broken skin.

Contact your maternity team, doctor, or an urgent-care service today if cellulitis is suspected. Keep the area clean and loosely covered if the skin is open, avoid squeezing it, and do not apply leftover antibiotics or steroid creams unless prescribed. Note when the redness began, whether its edge is moving, and any medicines or allergies. Your clinician may examine the skin, check your temperature and general health, and choose treatment that fits your pregnancy.

Seek emergency help for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe pain, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, a very fast heartbeat, or feeling suddenly much worse. A high temperature or shaking chills also need urgent assessment. These can signal a serious infection such as Sepsis. Do not wait for a fever before seeking care if the skin is worsening or you feel unwell.
