Cellulitis of the hand: symptoms and next steps

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper skin. On the hand, the skin may become warm, red, swollen, and painful around a cut, puncture, bite, burn, or cracked area. Swelling can make fingers stiff, and pain may increase when you move them. A wound near a nail, tendon, joint, or bite from an animal or person can involve structures that need specialised care. Redness may travel up the hand or arm. A clinician can examine sensation, circulation, movement, and the wound to decide how urgent treatment is.

Seek prompt medical advice for a red, hot, swollen, or painful hand, especially after a puncture or bite. Remove rings before swelling increases, keep any wound gently covered, and elevate the hand when resting. Do not squeeze the area, cut into it, or apply harsh disinfectants. Avoid using the hand for strenuous work. Tell the clinician about Type 2 Diabetes, immune problems, recent injuries, and medicine allergies. Treatment may include prescribed antibiotics and, when a collection is present, a procedure.

Go to emergency care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, numbness, pale or blue fingers, inability to bend or straighten a finger, red streaks up the arm, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or Fever with shaking chills. These signs can indicate a deeper infection or Sepsis. A bite wound, deep puncture, or injury involving a joint should be assessed urgently even if the skin change looks small.

Ask whether the infection involves a joint, tendon, nail area, or deeper space; whether imaging or drainage is needed; and how to protect movement during recovery. Ask when dressings should change and when to return.
