Cellulitis after a yellow jacket sting: what to know

Sting reactions often cause immediate pain and a raised, swollen area. Cellulitis tends to evolve with spreading warmth, tenderness, redness, or swelling around the sting site. Scratching can damage the skin and give bacteria an entry point. A large local reaction and cellulitis can look similar, so timing, progression, and an examination matter.

Wash the area gently, use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for comfort, and avoid scratching. If a stinger or foreign material is visible, do not dig into the skin. Contact a clinician when redness is enlarging, pain is increasing, or the area remains hot and swollen. Mention any history of severe sting allergy.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, faintness, or collapse. Seek urgent medical care for fever, rapidly spreading skin redness, severe pain, red streaks, confusion, or marked weakness because infection can become serious.
