Short answer

Coeliac disease can cause recurring bloating because gluten-triggered inflammation interferes with normal digestion and nutrient absorption.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible pattern
Bloating may recur after gluten exposure and can occur with diarrhoea or fatigue.
Testing point
Discuss testing before starting a gluten-free diet.
Support
Dietitian-led Nutrition Counselling can help with a balanced gluten-free plan.

What the bloating may mean

Bloating may feel like fullness, pressure or visible swelling after meals. In coeliac disease, eating gluten can activate an immune response in the small intestine. The resulting irritation may alter digestion and lead to gas, abdominal discomfort, loose stools or tiredness. These symptoms can also occur with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Food Intolerance, Lactose Intolerance, Giardiasis or Helicobacter Pylori Infection, so bloating alone cannot identify its cause.

What to do next

Arrange an assessment if bloating keeps returning, especially with diarrhoea, weight loss, fatigue or iron deficiency. Coeliac blood testing is more informative while gluten is still part of your diet; starting a strict gluten-free diet before speaking with a clinician can affect test interpretation. If coeliac disease is confirmed, a dietitian or Nutrition Counselling service can help you avoid gluten safely while keeping meals balanced. Do not assume every food-related symptom comes from gluten.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for persistent bloating with repeated vomiting, blood in the stool, black stools, marked weakness, dehydration, unintentional weight loss or severe abdominal pain. Get urgent help for sudden intense pain, a swollen rigid abdomen, fainting or difficulty breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether coeliac blood tests are appropriate before changing your diet, whether you need tests for anaemia or nutritional deficiencies, and which symptoms should trigger follow-up. Bring a brief record of meals, bloating, bowel changes and medicines.

Questions people ask

Does bloating prove that I have coeliac disease?

No. Bloating has several possible causes, including food intolerance and bowel conditions. Testing and a clinical assessment are needed.

Should I stop eating gluten before testing?

Speak with a clinician first. Removing gluten can change test results and make coeliac disease harder to assess.
