Trichomoniasis, often shortened to trich, is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis and is passed through sexual contact. Many infected people notice no symptoms. These symptoms also occur with other vaginal conditions, so symptoms alone cannot confirm trich. A clinician can examine you and arrange a laboratory test.

Arrange an appointment for testing if you have symptoms, a sexual partner has been diagnosed, or you are concerned about exposure. If the test confirms trich, take the oral medicine exactly as prescribed and finish the course even if symptoms settle sooner. Current sexual partners also need assessment and treatment because an untreated infection can pass back and forth. Avoid sex until everyone has completed treatment and symptoms have resolved. Your clinician may offer testing for other sexually transmitted infections and advise repeat trich testing after treatment.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, heavy bleeding, faintness, or symptoms during pregnancy.
