What should adults know about the pneumonia vaccine?

Pneumococcal infection may cause pneumonia, bloodstream infection, or infection around the brain. The vaccine prepares immune defences against selected bacterial types. It is not a general pneumonia vaccine: viruses such as COVID-19 and Influenza, along with other bacteria, can cause respiratory illness despite vaccination.

The right product and timing depend on factors such as age group, immune status, chronic lung or heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, smoking, and earlier pneumococcal doses. A clinician needs your full history to make the recommendation.

Bring any vaccination record to an appointment and describe previous reactions, current medicines, allergies, and illnesses affecting immunity. Ask whether you need one vaccine or a sequence, and whether another vaccine should be given at a separate visit. Do not assume that an old dose has no relevance.

A sore arm, fatigue, headache, or mild fever may follow vaccination. These effects usually settle with simple supportive care. If you are acutely unwell, ask whether the appointment should be delayed.

Get emergency help for throat or facial swelling, wheezing, difficulty breathing, fainting, or a rapidly spreading allergic rash after vaccination. During any illness, urgent assessment is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or marked deterioration. Pneumonia can become severe, and Sepsis is a medical emergency.
