Short answer

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause fever and body pain, so hydration and careful monitoring for warning signs are important.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical symptoms
Fever, headache and muscle or joint pain
Main support
Fluids, rest and clinician-approved fever relief
Urgent warning
Bleeding, severe pain, repeated vomiting or faintness

What dengue means

Dengue commonly presents with fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea or a rash. Chills can accompany a fever. Easy bruising or bleeding may occur and should not be ignored. Symptoms can change as the fever settles, so feeling temporarily better does not always mean the illness has passed. Dengue is diagnosed using the clinical picture, travel or mosquito exposure history and tests chosen by a clinician. It is not spread by ordinary casual contact between people.

What to do while unwell

Rest and take frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Keep track of urination, alertness, temperature and any bleeding so you can describe changes clearly. Use only fever or pain medicines that a clinician or pharmacist confirms are suitable; avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines unless specifically advised because they may increase bleeding risk. Prevent further mosquito bites with long clothing, screens or repellent so mosquitoes do not pick up and pass on the virus. Arrange a GP consultation for suspected dengue, especially after travel or residence in an area where dengue occurs.

When to seek urgent care

Go to urgent care for bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, extreme weakness or very little urine. Seek prompt medical advice for easy bruising, persistent fever, inability to drink or worsening symptoms as the fever changes. Children, pregnant people, older adults and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment. Bring a list of medicines and recent travel details to the review.

Questions for your doctor

Could these symptoms be dengue or another infection? Which pain or fever medicine is safe for me? Should I have blood tests or follow-up monitoring? What changes mean I should go straight to hospital?
