CCCA Hair Loss Treatment: What to Know

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia is a scarring form of hair loss that often begins near the crown and can spread outward. When inflammation damages a follicle, that follicle may no longer produce a normal hair. A dermatologist may examine the scalp closely, ask about styling practices and symptoms, and sometimes take a small biopsy to distinguish CCCA from other causes.

The treatment plan depends on whether inflammation is active, how much scarring is present, and whether another scalp problem is contributing. Existing scar tissue cannot be made to grow hair by anti-inflammatory treatment, so early assessment matters.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if thinning at the crown is widening, or if the scalp feels tender, itchy, burning, or unusually sensitive. Bring a list of products and medicines, plus photographs that show how the area has changed.

Use gentle washing and avoid tight braids, extensions, chemical relaxers, and high heat if they trigger discomfort or pulling. Do not start prescription anti-inflammatory or hair-growth treatment without confirming the diagnosis. Depending on findings, care may include topical or injected corticosteroid treatment, another anti-inflammatory medicine, and scheduled checks for activity. Hair restoration is considered only after inflammation has been controlled.

Seek prompt medical review for rapidly expanding thinning, pus, crusting, marked redness, new painful bumps, or severe tenderness. These changes can signal active inflammation or infection and may need a different treatment. Sudden shedding across the whole scalp also deserves assessment because CCCA may coexist with another hair-loss condition.

Ask whether the pattern suggests active CCCA, whether a biopsy is needed, which follicles appear scarred, and how progress will be monitored. Discuss styling changes, treatment side effects, and when regrowth or stabilization should be assessed.
