CC PET scan: understanding the test

PET-CT combines information about tissue activity with detailed body images. In cancer care it can help locate active areas, assess how far disease may extend, guide a biopsy site or compare activity before and after treatment. The abbreviation “CC” is not specific enough on its own to define the requested examination.

A small amount of radiotracer is given, commonly through a vein. After a quiet uptake period, you lie on a moving bed while the scanner collects PET and CT images. Areas using more tracer can appear more active, but activity is not automatically cancer: inflammation, infection and normal organs can also take up tracer.

The report is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, earlier scans and tissue results. A scan can identify a place that deserves closer attention, yet a biopsy may still be needed to establish what the cells are.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about food, drinks, medicines, exercise and arrival time because preparation affects tracer distribution. Tell staff beforehand if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, breastfeeding, have diabetes, use insulin, feel unable to lie flat, or have severe anxiety in enclosed spaces.

Bring the referral and relevant prior imaging if the centre requests it. Wear comfortable clothing without removable metal where possible. During the uptake period, resting quietly helps keep muscle activity from obscuring the images. Afterward, follow the centre’s guidance about fluids and close contact with pregnant people or young children.

Tell the scanner team immediately if you develop breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread hives, faintness or severe pain around the injection site. Significant reactions are uncommon, but these symptoms need prompt assessment.

If diabetes medicine was adjusted for the scan and you later become shaky, sweaty, confused or unusually drowsy, follow your glucose safety plan and obtain urgent help if symptoms do not resolve. New symptoms from the underlying illness should be reported based on their severity rather than waiting for the scan report.

Ask what “CC” means on your request, which body areas will be scanned, which tracer will be used and whether the CT portion includes contrast. When results are available, ask what each active area could represent, whether comparison with an older scan changes the interpretation and whether any finding needs another scan or biopsy.
