A complete blood count measures red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin, and platelets. A low haemoglobin or altered red-cell pattern can support a clinician’s assessment of iron-related anaemia, although other tests are often needed to check iron stores. White-cell changes may point toward infection or inflammation. A normal CBC does not rule out scalp disease, hormonal factors, inherited pattern loss, or temporary shedding after illness or stress.

Tell the clinician when shedding began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, and whether you have fatigue, heavy menstrual bleeding, dietary restriction, fever, scalp scaling, or a recent illness. The examination may include the scalp, hair-pull assessment, and targeted tests such as iron, thyroid, or vitamin testing. Treatment should follow the identified pattern rather than the blood test alone.

Arrange prompt review if hair loss is sudden, occurs in sharply defined patches, leaves scarring, or comes with scalp pain, pus, marked scale, or swollen glands. Seek urgent help for hair loss with severe weakness, fainting, or breathlessness. These features can indicate a broader problem requiring timely assessment.
