Cavitating pneumonia radiology describes a lung infection with a hollow space seen inside an area of inflamed lung. On a chest X-ray or CT scan, the cavity may form when infected tissue breaks down, sometimes leaving an air-filled or fluid-filled space. The appearance is a finding, not a complete diagnosis.

A radiologist considers the cavity's wall, position, surrounding inflammation, and any fluid or air level.
