Causes of wheezing in the throat

The symptom alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician may listen to your breathing and consider its timing, triggers, fever, cough, voice change, and medical history.

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and move away from smoke, fragrances, or another known trigger. Use a prescribed reliever exactly as directed; do not borrow someone else’s inhaler. Arrange medical advice if the sound is new, keeps returning, follows an infection, or affects sleep or activity. A clinician may recommend treatment such as a nebuliser when appropriate, but the cause still needs assessment.

Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, faintness, confusion, swelling of the lips or tongue, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Sudden wheezing after choking or an allergic exposure also needs urgent assessment. Children who are struggling to breathe, becoming unusually sleepy, or unable to feed should be assessed without delay.

Ask whether the sound is coming from the throat or chest, what triggers should be avoided, whether testing for asthma or allergy is needed, and which symptoms should prompt emergency help.
