Short answer

Secondary hypertension can result from kidney disease, sleep apnoea, hormone problems, obesity, or medicines and substances that raise blood pressure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Kidney disease, sleep apnoea, hormones, medicines, or obesity
Useful record

Emergency symptoms
Chest pressure, severe breathlessness, weakness, confusion, or speech trouble

What secondary hypertension means

Unlike primary hypertension, which develops without one clear underlying cause, secondary hypertension has a potentially identifiable driver. The kidneys help control fluid balance and blood pressure, so chronic kidney disease can contribute. Obstructive sleep apnoea causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep and may keep the body’s pressure-control systems activated. Hormone disorders, narrowing of blood vessels to the kidneys, and some prescription or non-prescription products can also raise readings. Obesity may add several pressure-raising influences at the same time.

Finding a cause does not mean that every high reading has the same explanation. A clinician considers how high the readings are, when they began, your medicines, sleep symptoms, family history, and examination findings. A blood-pressure pattern can be real even when you feel well.

What to do next

Keep a record of home readings with the time, position, and any symptoms, and bring every medicine, supplement, and stimulant product to an appointment. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Assessment may include repeated measurements, blood and urine tests, and checks of kidney function or hormone signals; the exact tests depend on your history. If obstructive sleep apnoea is suspected, mention loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, or marked daytime sleepiness. Treatment targets both the blood pressure and the factor driving it.

When to seek urgent care

Arrange prompt medical review for repeatedly very high readings, a sudden change from your usual pattern, or high blood pressure during pregnancy or soon after birth. Seek emergency help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms can signal an acute problem involving the heart, brain, or blood vessels; do not wait for a home reading to improve.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which causes fit your history, whether any medicine or supplement could be contributing, which tests are appropriate, and how to measure blood pressure at home. Ask how kidney health and sleep quality may affect the plan, and when your readings or symptoms should prompt urgent help.

Questions people ask

Can secondary hypertension cause symptoms?

It may cause no noticeable symptoms, even when readings are high. Symptoms may come from the underlying condition rather than the blood pressure itself.

Can medicines raise blood pressure?

Yes. Some prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, and stimulants can raise blood pressure, so bring a complete list for review.
