Causes of right loin pain

Kidney Stones often cause severe pain that comes in waves and may travel towards the groin. A Kidney Infection may cause a steady ache with fever, chills, nausea or feeling unwell. Urinary Tract Infection symptoms can include burning urination, urgency or needing to pass urine often, although the pain location varies.

Pain that changes with movement, lifting or pressing the area may come from muscles or the back. Pain with vomiting, abdominal tenderness or changes in bowel symptoms can have another source. The right side also lies near organs outside the urinary system, so location alone cannot identify the cause.

Note when the pain began, whether it is constant or wave-like, and whether urination, fever, nausea, injury or movement affects it. Arrange medical assessment if it persists, returns, or occurs with urinary symptoms.

Drink normally if you are able, but do not force fluids during severe pain or vomiting. Use only pain relief that is suitable for your health and other medicines. A clinician may check your abdomen, urine and vital signs, and may arrange further tests based on the findings.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with flank pain, repeated vomiting, blood in urine, faintness, confusion, inability to pass urine, or pain during pregnancy. These features can indicate infection, obstruction or another condition needing prompt treatment.

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests a stone, infection, muscle problem or another source, and whether urine testing or imaging is needed. Mention fever, urinary changes, bowel symptoms, pregnancy possibility, injuries and all medicines.
