Causes of Hair Breaking Off

Short answer
Hair breaking off can result from damage to the hair shaft, repeated tension, chemical processing, heat, friction, or a scalp condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Breakage clue
- Short, uneven hairs or split ends suggest damage along the shaft.
- First change
- Reduce heat, chemical processing, friction, and tight hairstyles.
- Scalp warning
- Pain, scaling, crusting, or patches of loss warrants medical assessment.
What causes hair to break off?
Breakage is different from shedding: a broken strand is often shorter than the surrounding hair and may have a split, rough, or uneven end. Shedding releases a complete hair from the follicle. Both can happen together, so the pattern and condition of the scalp help guide the next step.
What hair breakage may mean
Frequent bleaching, colouring, relaxing, or perming can weaken the shaft. Hot tools, very hot water, vigorous towel drying, and brushing wet or tangled hair can add mechanical stress. Tight braids, extensions, ponytails, or head coverings may pull on the same areas repeatedly; this pattern can be linked with traction alopecia.
Dry, brittle hair may reflect a disrupted outer cuticle, while short hairs around the hairline can reflect tension or friction. Itching, scaling, tenderness, broken hairs close to the scalp, or patches of reduced hair can point to a scalp problem such as scalp ringworm or another hair-loss condition. Gradual thinning at the crown or hairline is a different pattern from scattered shaft breakage and may fit male or female pattern hair loss. Sudden diffuse shedding after an illness or major stress can fit telogen effluvium, although it is not the same process as breakage.
What to do about hair breaking off
Pause bleaching, relaxing, perming, and other harsh chemical services while the hair is fragile. Reduce heat styling, use the lowest effective temperature, and let hair dry partly or fully before gentle styling. Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, avoid pulling through knots, and pat rather than rub with a towel.
Choose looser hairstyles and vary where bands or clips sit. Avoid extensions or styles that cause soreness, pulling, or a headache. A gentle cleanser and conditioner can reduce friction, and a small trim can remove split ends, but products cannot repair a strand once it has broken. Take clear photographs of the hair and scalp over time and record recent illness, stress, diet changes, medicines, and salon treatments for a clinician.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a dermatology assessment if breakage continues after reducing heat, chemicals, and tension, or if you notice progressive thinning, smooth patches, or a widening part. Seek prompt care for scalp pain, marked redness, crusting, pus, swelling, intense itch, or broken hairs with scaling, because infection or inflammation may need prescription treatment.
A clinician can examine the shaft and scalp, distinguish breakage from shedding, and decide whether testing or treatment is needed. Do not start a hair-loss medicine based only on broken ends; treatments such as finasteride have specific indications and safety considerations.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be shaft breakage, shedding, traction alopecia, or another form of hair loss? Does my scalp show inflammation, infection, or a pattern that needs treatment? Which styling practices should I stop, and what symptoms would mean I should return sooner?

Questions people ask
How can I tell breakage from hair shedding?
Broken hairs are often shorter and have uneven or split ends, while shedding usually releases a complete hair from the follicle. A clinician can assess both when they occur together.
Can tight hairstyles cause hair to break?
Yes. Repeated pulling from tight braids, extensions, ponytails, or clips can weaken hairs and may also contribute to traction alopecia.
Will conditioner repair hair that has already broken?
Conditioner can reduce friction and make fragile hair easier to handle, but it cannot rejoin a strand that has already broken. Gentle care and trimming damaged ends may help prevent further splitting.
