Causes of face swelling in the morning

Mild puffiness that improves after getting up can occur when fluid shifts while you sleep. It may also follow salty food, poor sleep, or irritation. Food allergy and angioedema can cause swelling of the lips, eyelids, face, or tongue, sometimes after a meal or medicine. Sinusitis may add facial pressure, blocked breathing, nasal discharge, or tenderness. Cellulitis more often causes a warm, red, painful area and may spread. Recurrent swelling with changes in urination or swelling elsewhere needs assessment for conditions such as chronic kidney disease. A morning pattern does not by itself show the cause.

Take a photograph when the swelling is most noticeable and note new foods, medicines, cosmetics, insect bites, congestion, pain, and how long it lasts. Avoid a suspected trigger until assessed, but do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician can examine the skin, mouth, nose, breathing, and signs of fluid retention. Bring the product or medicine name if the episode followed a new exposure.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading swelling. These can be features of anaphylaxis and require emergency treatment. Seek prompt review for fever with red painful skin, eye pain or vision change, severe headache, or swelling that is persistent or worsening.

Ask whether the pattern fits an allergy, angioedema, sinusitis, infection, or fluid retention; what exposures to avoid; and what action plan to follow if mouth or throat swelling returns.
